Two Sides of the Same Coin:Monitoring and Evidence Gathering for Open Science and Research Assessment Reform

Two Sides of the Same Coin:Monitoring and Evidence Gathering for Open Science and Research Assessment Reform
| We will discuss the shared goals that underpin international initiatives in this area, examine how their efforts support progress towards these goals, and reflect on the role of research funding and research performing organisations in advancing this work. Following our webinar last year, the event will launch a new report, commissioned by Science Europe, which maps the 2024 survey findings from our Member Organisations against the current academic research in these areas. This CWTS/Know Center report will be analysed together with current best practices of Science Europe Member Organisations to propose new and updated recommendations within these contexts. It will take place on Monday 20 October 2025, from 16.00–17.30 CEST. | ||

| Background
As open science practices gain momentum and research assessment reform becomes more ambitious, there is a growing need to strengthen monitoring systems and improve evidence-based approaches. Several key initiatives lead the way, including the Open Science Monitoring Initiative, the Global Research Initiative on Open Science, the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment.Science Europe and its Member Organisations have played a leading role in shaping these developments. Building on our established guidelines and recommendations on open access monitoring, our members contribute to all major initiatives in this space. The new report launched at this event reflects these contributions and helps situate them within broader policy and scholarly contexts. We look forward to seeing you at the webinar.
